ENERGY & WATER KAIZENS 

Background:

Under their “Think Planet” (TP) sustainability programme, Radisson Hotels Group operating in the EMEA regions, appointed ESS Consultants to customise and facilitate a hotel specific Energy and Water kaizen programme.

 

The Programme:

The initial programme concentrated on newly opened and older hotels operated in Africa and Western Europe. The TP target was 10% energy and 10% water reduction by 2020.

 

An experienced kaizen consultant visited each hotel and using a team-based approach guided hotel staff (ranging from facilities engineers and chefs, administration, beverage and restaurant managers to housekeeping, office based and security staff) to identify operational changes that would reduce energy and water usage without impacting guest comfort and experience.

 

Efficiency Improvements:

On average, about 95 opportunities were identified by each hotel team. with significant success in terms of motivating the local hotel teams to identify and implement simple or low-cost savings measures (JDIs) as well as efficiency measures requiring capital investment.

The Results:

Of the 60 kaizens conducted to date, the results show that on average over 100 savings ideas were generated by the kaizen team of which 60 ideas were “Just Do It” actions which could be implemented immediately kick starting the savings programme

  • 16% energy savings potential identified against a target of 10%

  • 13 % water savings potential identified against a target of 10%

  • 5 major efficiency and renewables energy capex projects identified towards a zero carbon future

Electricity = 12% savings - after our kaizen and jdi’s changes our consumption keeps showing improvements

 

Water = 4% savings - is not a big change, but is very good balance with last year

 

Gas = 32% savings - well under last year!”
